Michigan Department of Conservation forest fire summary, 1928-1947.

This record group consists of statistics (on white-print paper charts, 19 1/2" x 36") on forest fire occurrences in districts and individual counties of Michigan. Offers name of county and number of district; number of fires; number of acres owned by state and private citizens; average acres per fire; area classes (under 1/4 acres, 1/4 to 9 acres, 10 acres and over); and acres of forest types burned, growth burned and property destroyed. Also includes a second chart listing number of fires, area and amount damaged by causes (lightning, railroad, camp fires, smokers, brush burning, incendiary, and lumbering).

The 1925 Clark-McNary Act expanded the provisions of 1911 Federal legislation creating the National Forest System (Weeks Law). It made it easier for the United States Department of Agriculture to buy land from those sellers whose property was located within the National Forest System.
